Mombasa is a regional, cultural and economic hub; it has an extra-large port and an international airport, and is an important regional tourism center. It is a melting pot of languages and cultures from all sides of the Indian Ocean, which waits like an exotic dessert for travelers who make it to Kenya’s coastline.
Having more in common with Dakar or Dar es Salaam than Nairobi, Mombasa’s blend of India, Arabia and Africa can be intoxicating, and many visitors find themselves seduced by East Africa’s biggest and most cosmopolitan port despite its grime and sleaze, which somehow only adds to the place’s considerable charm. Indeed, the city dubbed in Swahili Kisiwa Cha Mvita – the Island of War – has many faces, from the ecstatic passion of the call to prayer over the Old Town, to the waves crashing against the coral beaches below Fort Jesus and the sight of a Zanzibar-bound dhow slipping over the horizon.
Tour Itinerary
Depart from Nairobi to Mombasa by a means of your own choice (SGR OR Flight). Transfer to your hotel from the place of arrival. Check in at the hotel and then freshen up. After you have taken your lunch you can relax at the beach as you enjoy the cool breeze of the ocean waves.
Pick up from your hotel and proceed to Wasini Island which is at the north of the delicate Kisite Marine Park. Sail through the marine park on an authentic dhow before diving into the azure waters and discovering the colorful ocean life that lives here. After either scuba diving or snorkeling, savor a tasty lunch on shore.
In Shimoni, a former colonial settlement and port just north of the Tanzanian border, board your dhow—a vessel with distinctively triangular sails—and cruise across the narrow channel to the picturesque Wasini Island. Grab your underwater equipment of choice and plunge into the irresistible waters, rich in marine life.
Float, swim, and marvel at the diversity of vibrant life in this reef habitat. For those with scuba kit, the excellent local dive sites are a hive of activity for larger creatures. After working up an appetite, pull yourself from the sea to enjoy a traditional lunch, served Swahili-style on the beach. As you eat, keep your eyes on the waves for dolphins coming to play in the island's protected, majestic waters. Return to the hotel later.
You will spend this full day at Shimba Hills National Reserve and Mwalugunje Elephant Sanctuary. The Shimba Hills National Reserve being only 60km from Mombasa, is ideal for a day visit. It contains one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa and is where a great diversity of Kenya's plant species are found, many of which are endangered. It is also a home to many Elephant, and is the only place in Kenya where tourists can see the Sable Antelope. You will also visit Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary which lies in the Shimba Hills forest near the Kwale Shimba Hills National Reserve and is managed by the local council of Mwaluganje. The site was once a farm that elephants frequented to feed on a certain crop. It was then decided to turn the place into a sanctuary. A beautiful elephant watching site has been constructed from where visitors have uninterrupted view ot the large animals. Occassionally one may also spot leopards there. Just at the entrance of the sanctuary there is a local factory that makes paper from elephant dung. Later dinner and Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast you will have a nature walk at Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest. The forest is found close to Diani beach, one of the most intensively developed tourists resort on the Kenyan coast. Kaya Kinondo is an indigenous sacred forest that has survived pressures from population growth, poverty, tourist development because of the cultural beliefs of the Digo Mijikenda people who have used the Kayas such as Kinondo to commune with their ancestral spirits through worship and sacrificial offerings. The main forms of livelihoods in the area are farming (mainly fruits for sale and grains for subsistence use), fishing, and doing small business and employment in beach activities. Later Dinner and Overnight at the hotel.
You will visit Diani Beach Art Gallery which is the first space of its kind in the coastal region of Kenya. It is not only a commercial gallery but also a meeting space for artists, art lovers and patrons alike. Promotes Fine African Art locally and internationally. Enjoy the rest of your day at Diani Beach. Later dinner and overnight at the hotel.
